Justin was the last town clerk of Northampton before its division, the first town clerk of Parma, New York and the first school commissioner of Ogden, New York.  He also opened the second tavern in Ogden Center.  After it was closed as a public house, the bar was used for meetings of the Presbyterian Church.  The bar later burned.  Various early census list his first name as Gusten and Austen.
