Birth: 11 NOV 1836 Mayfield, Cuyahoga Co, Ohio Note: Per Civil War Pension Records, there is a full page from Martin dated 25 SEP 1912 where he states that the above birth date is accurate. 1870 Michigan census states it is NOV 1837. Tombstone says 1838. *Note:* in 1840, the only Carr family we could find in Mayfield, Cuyahoga Co, Ohio was a Calvenell Carr and family. Related? *1850 Census:* Redford, Wayne Co, Michigan Note: Living with an uncle Isaac and a cousin Luther D. He is listed as Martin V. B. Carr *First Marriage:* to Adaline Fredenburg Note: They were divorced in Ionia County. *1860 Census:* Unable to find in Ohio or Michigan. *Birth of Daughter:* ABT 1861 Name: Eliza Carr *Birth of Son:* 1862 Name: James G. Carr *Birth of Son:* 1862 Name: Delbert Benjamin Carr *Living:* In Bay City, Bay Co, Michigan Military: 08 FEB 1864 Place: Bangor, Michigan Note: Enlisted in company C, 6th Infantry (heavy artillery), Feb 8,1864, at Bangor for 3 years, age 27. Mustered Feb 19, 1864. Mustered out at New Orleans, La, Aug 20, 1865. The 1890 Veterans census states that Martin enlisted Aug 12, 1861 and was discharged Aug 12, 1862. *Military Note:* One day, while on scouting duty, Martin found himself surrounded by Confederate soldiers. He was able to hide in a hollow log until after they had left the vicinity and was thus able to escape capture. Martin was a farmer. *1910 Census:* 22 APR 1910 Place: Odessa Twp, Ionia Co, Michigan Note: Wife, Alice, is living in household. Martin says he has been married 3 times, and that one of his previous marriages lasted 11 years (We believe he is referring to his first marriage.) *Physical Description:* 18 MAY 1912 Note: From Martin's civil war pension file, he is described as being 5' 8" tall, with a light complexion, blue eyes, and light hair. *Further Disability:* Martin later received an increase in his military pension due to stomach trouble and disease of digestion as a result of the chronic diarrhea. He was troubled with bloating, severe pain and tenderness in the stomach and bowels. He also had rheumatism in his back and hips which prevented him from doing any stooping or lifting and his heart also grew worse. Martin also had double hernias. *Note:* Martin was a portly gentleman, full of good humor, pleasant, and he smoked a pipe continuously. When he became old, he lived out his life with his daughter, Etta McRoberts, on their farm near Lake Odessa.
