Both James McIntyre and Mary McColl were natives of New York State. They came to Michigan in 1834. In 1835 they purchased 160 acres in section 31 of Unadilla Twp, Livingston Co, Michigan. A log house was rolled up, the forest cleared and the land improved.
Their first home was very crude and primitive. Through thrift and perseverance, the family prospered. Sometime toward the end of the century, they built a more substantial house and barn. These buildings were leveled by a tornado in 1914.
At the year ending June 1, 1860, Mr. McIntyre had the following personal property: 100 acres tillable land, 180 acres undeveloped land, property value – $2,000.00; farming equipment valued at $100.00; six horses, four cows, 2 oxen, 15 other cattle, 66 sheep, 9 swine, livestock valued at $700.00; also 350 bushels of wheat, 50 bushels of rye, 250 bushels of Indian corn, 16 bushels of oats, and 200 lbs of wool. (per the 1860 Agricultural Census for Livingston Co) – Marianna (House) Malkowski (2nd great granddaughter of James and Mary)
