Note:  Amos, a local farmer, was elected to the Charlestown Town Council in 1775.  It was a critical time.  Charlestown was on Long Island Sound.   British frigates often bombed coastal towns. British soldiers might be landed for a raid or an invasion at any moment.  Amos led the town council to appoint his son and namesake, Amos, Jr., to be captain of the militia.
