Charles Shue & Mary Miller
Faith, Family, and Pennsylvania Roots
Charles Shue was born on May 6, 1817, in Pennsylvania, probably York County. His life, like that of so many of his neighbors, was shaped by the rhythms of farm work, family, and the German Reformed faith that had been passed down through the generations.
Sometime before 1845, he married Mary Miller, who was born December 26, 1826 in Germany. Together they built a household that reflected both the discipline of their faith and the warmth of Mary’s gentle care.
Charles was known as a strict father. In the Shue home, discipline and hard work were expected, and his children later remembered how he required them to turn over all of their earnings to him until they reached the age of majority. For Charles, this was part of raising industrious and responsible children, consistent with the values of their German Reformed community.
Yet, while he was remembered as stern, Mary was described by their children as a wonderful mother. Her kindness and nurturing presence softened the edges of Charles’s strictness, creating balance in the family and ensuring that her children felt loved and supported.
Charles and Mary spent their lives in York County, building their family and raising their children in the traditions of faith, hard work, and community. Charles passed away on March 31, 1889, at the age of 72. Mary lived for another 24 years, living with different family members in her later years.
Mary passed on September 13, 1913, at the age of 87. They were buried together in the historic Bethlehem Stonepile Cemetery, not far from the land where they had spent their lives.
Their story is one of discipline and devotion, softened by love and faith. Charles and Mary left behind a legacy not only in the land they tilled and the family they raised but also in the memories their children carried with the strength of a father’s discipline and the tenderness of a mother’s love.
