Military Note: One day, while on scouting duty, Martin found himself surrounded by Confederate soldiers. He was able to hide in a hollow log until after they had left the vicinity and was thus able to escape capture.

Physical Description: 18 MAY 1912
Note: From Martin’s civil war pension file, he is described as being 5′ 8″ tall, with a light complexion, blue eyes, and light hair.
Further Disability: Martin later received an increase in his military pension due to stomach trouble and disease of digestion as a result of the chronic diarrhea. He was troubled with bloating, severe pain and tenderness in the stomach and bowels. He also had rheumatism in his back and hips which prevented him from doing any stooping or lifting and his heart also grew worse. Martin also had double hernias.
Note: Martin was a portly gentleman, full of good humor, pleasant, and he smoked a pipe continuously. When he became old, he lived out his life with his daughter, Etta McRoberts, on their farm near Lake Odessa.
Death: 18 DEC 1919 Odessa Twp, Ionia Co, Michigan
Note: 83 years 1 month 7 days old. Was a farmer. Died from septicaemia from wound.
